So what is fear? According to the dictionary, fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.
Sweaty palms, racing heartbeat, nausea, anxiety. Fear certainly is unpleasant! YYou know that feeling in the pit of your stomach that makes you just want to hide, and curl up somewhere safe? Me too! And don't you just hate that feeling? Fear will cause us to stop dead in our tracks and flee just as fast as we can in the other direction. When we start feeling incapable, overwhelmed, unworthy, and paralyzed by fear, we need to take a good look at the source of the problem. When we allow fear to sit in the driver seat of our lives and make our decisions for us, we are hindering ourselves and the calling God has for us. This is why creating a prayer strategy for your fear is so important.
I bet if I were to ask you to name just one scripture dealing with fear, one would quickly come to mind. One of the very first scriptures I remember memorizing is Deuteronomy 31:6, which says, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." (NIV) As Priscilla points out in the book, God touches on fear more than 300 times in Scripture! God knows that we will struggle with fear. On page 110, Priscilla recounts the story of Moses and the children of Israel, when they are pinned up against the waters of the Red Sea while the Egyptian pharaoh and his armies were bearing down from behind. She points out that when Moses said to the people, "Do not fear!" Moses wasn't telling them not to feel fear. Fear is a natural human response to a lot of things, so we can feel fear but we are not to wallow in it, choose it, make friends with it, entertain it, or engage it. I loved this point. There will absolutely be times and circumstances in our lives that cause fear, but it's what we do through the fear that counts.
2 Timothy 1:7 says "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." Fear is not from God, friends. The enemy uses fear to keep us from the goodness God has in store for us and His Kingdom. God is in control. He is always with us, and He has prepared a way ahead of us. Ephesians 2:10 (CSB) says "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do." All the prep work has been done. Let's push past fear and walk into the path God has already paved for us. Have faith in God's plan and His will for you. When we start to feel fear creeping up, let's turn to God in prayer, push through the fear, and trust God's goodness. He is faithful, y'all.
Are you ready to pray fervently and create a prayer strategy for your fears? To get started, here are some scriptures you might consider adding to your prayer strategy for your fears. If you're following along in the book you can find these scriptures, plus more, on pages 115-117.
- But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me? Psalm 56:3-4
- For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
- I will insruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. Psalm 32:8
